Tech Question - Can I use Adhere to reinforce a nailed on shoe?

on Fri, 10/04/2013 - 22:47

"I have a horse that will constantly throw a show.  Bell boots on or not.  I have even tried putting boots on her and the bell boots.  Eventually the boots stretch so much that they just fall off of course.  My question, this last time all was going well until the 6th week.  I had noticed the nail clinches looked a bit loose, and sure enough the shoe was off within 24 hours.  I am wondering if I can use a bit of Adhere to reinforce the clinches to keep the shoe on long enough to reach the farrier date?  She is club footed on this particular foot.  As long as the shoe and pad are on

Tech Question: Which Vettec product works best with Easy Boot Gloves?

on Fri, 10/04/2013 - 22:26

"I am looking for a material to provide cushion and shock absorption in my Easyboot gloves during riding only.  The Sil-Pak seems like it would work as I could create a pad and since it does not bond to the sole and maintains its shape indefinitely I could take it out when I take off the boots. But it is my understanding that Equi-Pak and Equi-Pak Soft are better at reducing concussion. Will the Equi-Pak / Equi-Pak Soft retain its shape forever, and is it possible to make it removable from the hoof (like putting Vaseline on the hoof before application?)"

Thank you

Vettec Clinic in Nova Scotia

on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 21:39

Here are some pictures from a Vettec clinic in Windsor, Novia Scotia. Vettec Rep, Kris Kibbey, drove up for the clinic on Wednesday Sept. 11th, 2013.  It was held at the Vet Clinic in Windsor, and there were roughly 30 people who attended.  For the most part, the attendees were farriers from the surrounding area. The group started out with a PowerPoint presentation by Kris and then he went over all Vettec products and how they are used. Kris demonstrated applying a Super Fast shoe, glued on a shoe with Adhere and demonstrated a Sole-Guard pour in pad.

Farrier success with Vettec Super Fast and Equi Pak

on Mon, 09/30/2013 - 21:15
This is a great case study submitted by farrier, Jack Brock:

"Chopper is a Jerusalem donkey that had White Line Diseases in his left hind and by the time I was called had infected 3/4 of his foot. I removed a 2" by 3" inch section of his 4" foot exposing the infected area. He was also treated with white lightning for a week until it was completely gone. Then I rebuilt his foot with Equi-Thane Super Fast laying two coffee stirring straws one on each side for drainage in case of infection. I then covered the area removed with Super Fast making a shoe, then packed his foot with Equi-Pak. We

Coronet Band Injury and Vettec

on Thu, 09/26/2013 - 17:49

Farrier Sydney Kotow provided these great before and after photos of a coronet band injury.  Here is what she said about them:

This colt had a coronet band injury a few months ago that was splitting open bigger with every step and making him ouchy.  This was nothing a little Vettec can't fix.

Sydney used Adhere hoof repair material to cover the injured portion of the hoof wall.  Adhere is a fast-setting urethane adhesive designed to bond steel, aluminum and urethane shoes to the hoof and to fabricate large and small hoof wall repairs. The material can be nailed, nipped and rasped.

Short Trimmed Draft Foot Rebuilt with Adhere

on Tue, 09/24/2013 - 16:59

This big guy was trimmed short to relieve the stress to the wall which had held a persistent toe crack.  Unfortunately the trimmer took all the hoof support and the horse ended up lame due to walking on his sole alone.  A farrier and vet teamed up with Vettec's Larkin Greene to rebuild the wall support with black Adhere and to stabilize the crack near the ground without covering up the deeper portion above.  The follow up may include total debridement and repair, but this time they just wanted to hold it together to allow some hoof wall to grow out.

Completed 55 miles on rocks with Superfast and Sole-Guard

on Tue, 09/17/2013 - 20:58
Vettec user, Cindy K., sent us a great set of pictures and a description of how Vettec products helped her win!
Hi, I wanted to let you know that my horse and I completed 55 miles on rocks with a Superfast custom shoe and a Sole-Guard pad, in Ft. Stanton, NM.  We came in second place!
This event was an AERC Endurance Ride on extremely hilly, rocky trails in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico, a long way away and different from the terrain at our home on the Texas Gulf Coast.  Thank you Vettec for your products, which allowed me to ride these trails on my barefoot horse!

Equi-Pak CS and Superfast help with founder and laminitis!

on Thu, 09/12/2013 - 18:54

This is a great success story that Vettec Rep, Lynne Myers, sent in:

Timmy is a 20 something warmblood gelding. Around the first of May he was diagnosed with a mild case of laminitis. Farrier John Turner decided on a conservative shoeing protocol that included Vettec Equi-Pak CS pours in both front feet. Timmy did okay for about 4 weeks and had a relapse with x-rays showing founder in both front feet. John wanted to make Timmy more comfortable and contacted me about using Vettec SuperFast on the bottom of the hospital plate. It was a success.

Vettec Hands on Clinic at the Kentucky Horseshoeing School

on Mon, 09/09/2013 - 23:18

Recently, Kris Kibbey, of Vettec visited the Kentucky Horseshoeing School to work with the 36 week students. They went over all the Vettec products with a power point presentation and then worked on applications.  They used Adhere to glue on a shoe and made a Superfast shoe.  Each shoe was then  filled with either Equi-Pak or Equi-Pak CS.  It was a great chance for the students to practice using Vettec products before they found themselves in a stressful situation when they needed to use them and had no experience.

If you know of a group of farriers that would enjoy attending a similar

Equi-Pak CS helps Coffin Bone Fracture, P3 remodeling, & Chronic Laminitis

on Mon, 09/09/2013 - 23:01

Recently farrier, Seth Parker, shared this case study with us.  We thought we'd pass it along.  Enjoy!

This is a Coffin Bone Fracture, P3 remodeling, & Chronic Laminitis case from December.

The plastic matrix pour-pad allows for a shallow pour of Vettec Equi-Pak CS only to the level of the rim pad for support without sole pressure. . There is also a very thick leather pad under there for big time support because the sole is almost convex.

I just started on the case in April and got this guy comfortable literally overnight. I am thrilled with this one.

Vettec Superfast lateral extension on a sheep!

on Mon, 09/09/2013 - 22:43

We always like to share the stories we hear from our end users.  This is a quick tale we recieved from Australian Farrier, Michael Fuin Dip with Horseshoe Express.  Enjoy!

I thought I would share with you this Vettec Superfast lateral extension that I did on lame male Barbary Sheep at one of our Australian Zoos . He is now sound, weight bearing level and balanced. I am told by his keepers that he is now eating well and chasing the girls around again. So thanks Vettec!  - Michael Fuin Dip WCF

Have you done any unusual repairs with Vettec products? If so, we'd love to hear your story.

Even Horses that Go Barefoot Need some Protection Sometimes

on Tue, 08/27/2013 - 20:15

Meet Jeanette McGrath, a barefoot trimmer who works in Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming.  Jeanette recently spent some time with Vettec's Larkin Greene to learn about making SuperFast shoes and pour-in pad materials.  Even horses that can go barefoot need some protection sometimes.  Jeanette has a unique story; she and her husband Richard spent almost two years riding 4,000 miles across the US with no support vehicles and everything they owned on 4 horses and a mule.

Vettec's SG-20 Adhesive Works to Repair Breathable Waders

on Fri, 08/09/2013 - 18:53

You already know that SG-20 can repair Muck Boots, but did you know that it also repairs Neoprene and Breathable waders?!? Well it does.  For Neoprene waders, they repair can be done as long as the waders are clean and dry.

If a repair is being made on the breathable wader material you would not try to fix the leak on the outside of the waders as it will not totally bond. This is because the breathable wader material is covered with a water resistant coating that SG-20 doesn't adhere to.  Instead, we would suggest turning the waders inside out as much as possible to access the area.

Vettec's Adhere helps with White Line Disease

on Wed, 07/24/2013 - 16:57

Japanese farrier Tomohiro Otani uses beige Adhere to glue a shoe on a foot compromised by White Line Disease.  He uses a peroxide type product in a syringe to kill bacteria and a home made tool for cleaning.  This simple tool is made from a rasp tang with a handle made from SuperFast.  To allow maximum hoof flex, adhesive is not applied to the entire circumference of the capsule.  Otani saves the white peel off backing from using our blue foam boards, and uses them to smooth the application to save both material and rasping time.

Sole-Guard, Superfast and Equi-Pak CS help a foundered mare!

on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 18:17

We recently received this great note from a Vettec user and thought we'd pass it along to you! Enjoy.

Just wanted to say what a huge difference Vettec and Lynne Myers along with Joe Most have made to our foundered mare. She has been uncomfortable for many years! However, when Joe and Lynne came to do a workshop at my home, she became a new horse. They took one look at her and said "Yes, we can help her." She came out of the stall very slowly and painfully. Joe went to work and was very patient with her as she was too sore to stand for any length of time. With the use of Super Fast, Sole

Adhere and Equi-Pak Soft help with a P3 Fracture

on Wed, 07/03/2013 - 17:52

This 2 year Thoroughbred mare (shown here sedated with Dormosedan) had real promise on the track until she banged her hoof on a rail and fractured the lateral wing of P3 in the right fore.  After the X-ray showed a hairline crack, the vet ordered stall rest and consulted farrier Joby Souza to discuss a support shoe.  Joby determined that a glue on shoe with soft pad support was the best place to start.  He called Vettec's Larkin Greene and the two have been applying this package every 4 weeks since April.  The steel shoe is glued with Adhere but the lateral side is left "floated" so that it

"Equi-Pak transformed my horses' feet! Thank you Vettec."

on Thu, 06/13/2013 - 19:38

I have to thank you!  Equi-Pak has transformed my horses’ feet!! He has gone from a flat footed, broken back angled very sad looking horse to almost normal shaped hooves.  He now has heels!!!  We took the most recent pack out of his back feet and the cleft of frog is now noticeably deeper, his feet are symmetrical and his frogs are at the right level – they had prolapsed to below the level of his shoe.  Now the rasp does not come into contact with it if you lay it over the heels.

Repair you Boots with Vettec's SG-20 Adhesive!

Vettec products used to repair hoofwall after Keratoma removal - Part 2

on Fri, 06/07/2013 - 18:42

Larkin Greene provided a follow up on a the case study involving a horse whose hoofwall was resected due to a keratoma.  Here is what he reported:

After 10 weeks, the foot was overgrowing the shoe and our adhesive handiwork was coming loose.  During that time the EquiPak CS and sterile gauze plug did it's job and the owner changed it out twice.  Since the foot had grown down nicely we were able to reset the shoe without the need for adhesive reinforcement.

Customize your hoof boot fit with Vettec's Adhere or Sole-Guard

on Fri, 05/31/2013 - 17:20
Custom fit your boot with Adhere or Sole-Guard

One of the limitations of hoof boots has always been fit, especially the short length in the heels.  Even a boot that fits snugly on the capsule is often too short to adequately support the heels, especially if the boot is worn for more than a week.  But just like any other hoof protection device, a boot is adjustable to a certain extent, and Easy Care's glue on boot even more so.

To compensate for the lack of heel support on this glue on boot, a window was cut in the toe area to allow the hoof to poke through, thus allowing the boot to be slid back between 1/8" and 1/4".  This can make a
