Tech Question: Will Sole-Guard work on a thin soled horse?

on Fri, 07/25/2014 - 20:50

"I bought Sole-Guard, after I read the instructions I am unsure if I can use it.  My horse has thin soles and it said not to use it for thin soles.  What can I use for thin soles and thin hoof walls? HELP"

The above was an email we received a few weeks ago.  This is a good question, as Sole-Guard is a firmer pad material and isn't the right fit for all horse hooves.  Here is our response to this issue:

A Sole-Guard application on thin soles will depend on what type of ground your horse is on and what it's activity level is.  If your horse is already bruised or sore before application, then we would suggest that you stay away from using Sole-Guard for the time being.  If not, and the feet are in dry conditions, it is probably ok to use.

On the other hand, if your horses' activity level is not extreme, you could also create a custom shoe using SuperFast and then fill the sole with Equi-Pak.  The custom shoe will protect the hoof walls while Equi-Pak takes some weight off the walls and allows them to grow down faster and increase sole depth.

As mentioned, a lot will depend on the terrain you are in, where you are located and what you're doing with your horse.  Before doing anything, we do recommend that you consult with your farrier and vet.
